Dr. Tichansky is a board certified surgeon who is fellowship-trained in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric surgery. He grew up in Wayne, New Jersey and attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of the national mechanical engineering honor society. He went on to attend UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in May 1996 and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. After medical school, he did his surgical residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and completed a Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship in June 2003 at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Following training, he went into private practice in Princeton, N.J. with one of the "fathers of bariatric surgery" until he accepted a faculty position with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee to pursue an academic career in Minimally Invasive Surgery in August 2004. While there he served as Associate Professor of Surgery, Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Co-Director of the Weight Management Center at Methodist University Hospital, Co-Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at the Regional Medical Center, Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at UT, and a member of the Board of Directors for UT Medical Group. Dr. Tichansky returns to Jefferson as an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Program.
Dr. Tichansky is currently chairman of the Membership Committee of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and serves on the National Curriculum and Education Committee of the Fellowship Council (of Minimally Invasive, Bariatric, Hepatobiliary, and advanced GI fellowships). He has performed extensive research in the fields of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery to improve patient safety and care and has authored/co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, five book chapters, and greater than 100 scientific presentations.
